Walmart recently reported that its eCommerce third-party fulfillment business has grown 500% last year. This robust growth is an excellent sign for Walmart’s competing general marketplace which is vying to directly compete with the monolith that is Amazon.
Amazon has found great success with it’s third-party fulfillment arm and Walmart doesn’t need to change much from the playbook we’ve already seen Amazon implement. Next steps here are to really drive adoption of these services by sellers on Walmart’s marketplace by offering incentives to platform producers using Walmart’s fulfillment services. I think there could be some hesitance from sellers already onborded into Amazon’s dominant FBA (Fulfilled By Amazon) ecosystem but I see a future state here where medium to large sellers find it necessary to participate in multiple platform specific fulfillment programs.
